The three Saboya brothers who integrate the Trío Instrumental Palos y Cuerdas (Sticks and Strings Instrumental Trio) were born in Tunja, Colombia, between 1979 and 1980. They began classical musical studies in oboe, cello and trumpet at the Music School of Tunja. In 1995, they founded the trio in order to research and perform Colombian popular repertoire, in particular, that of the Andes, the "Altiplano".
They have been awarded several national prizes and decorations for their individual and group work, such as the the first prizes for bandola, tiple and guitar at the Festival Nacional del Pasillo in Caldas in 1995 and 1997, first prize for Instrumental Music at the National Festival of Hatoviejo, Antioquia, in 1997 and 2001, first prizes for for tiple and bandola at the National Competition Imaginación en el Umbral - Performers of the Next Millenium, in Bogotá 1999, and the 2001-2 Ministry of Culture Scholarship for Group Performance. José Daniel, the guitarist, won the guitar competition COMPENSAR 2004. The Trío were special guests at the 2003 Antonio Lauro Festival in Venezuela.
